Julia to host Battle of the Bands competition at Corn Exchange, Camborne

3.09.00pm GMT Thu 27th Mar 2008

MUSICIANS from across Cornwall are being invited to enter a Battle of the Bands competition sponsored by local MP Julia Goldsworthy.

Six finalists will be selected to play a 20 minute set in front of 400 people at the Corn Exchange in Camborne, on May 21.

People who attend the event will vote for the best band on the night, who will go on to record a professionally-produced EP at Black and White recording studio in Redruth.

Falmouth and Camborne MP Julia Goldsworthy, who organised the event in conjunction with Cornwall Young Liberals, will announce the winner on the night.

Julia said: "As a local MP I want to do everything I can to support Cornwall's vibrant live music scene.

"We are lucky to have so many brilliant young musicians here, many of whom are destined for great things.

"I feel it is important for the community to encourage this talent and urge our young people to reach their full potential.

"That is why I decided to set up this Battle of the Bands competition in conjunction with Cornwall Young Liberals.

"I hope it will help in a small way to improve the chances of success for one of our promising new bands."

The shortlist for finalists will be drawn up by four of Cornwall's top live music experts.

They are: Lee Trewhela (entertainment editor, West Briton); Oscar Morse (community editor, Cornish Guardian); Nigel Barker (presenter, Altlantic FM), and Barnaby Ray (music engineer).

Bands who wish to take part must send demos marked "Battle of the Bands" to Julia's constituency office at 75 Trelowarren Street, Camborne, TR14 8AL.

Alternatively, they can enter by sending a message to Julia via Myspace at www.myspace.com/juliagoldsworthy.

The closing date for entries is Friday, April 18.
