Julia supports Fairtrade Fortnight

11.35.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 25th Feb 2008

Julia Goldsworthy MP will pull out all the stops to support Fairtrade Fortnight, which begins today.

Miss Goldsworthy has agreed to take part in a charity barn dance at Archbishop Benson School in Truro on Saturday, March 1, to raise money for Christian Aid, which supports fair trade issues worldwide.

And today she has written to all the schools in Falmouth and Camborne, urging them to join the Fairtrade Schools scheme.

The nationwide scheme encourages schools to organise fair trade activities across three different subjects.

Commenting, Miss Goldsworthy said:

"I believe it is important that we all support fair trade, and encourage our children to understand the issues.

"As the world grows richer, we have a moral duty to help the development of people in poorer countries.

"The Fairtrade Schools scheme aims to show children how they can make a difference to the lives of poorer people through their own choices, and I fully support that."
