Fire proposals highlight need for fair funding for Cornwall

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 26th Jan 2007

Commenting on the news that the Scrutiny Committee at Cornwall County Council hasn't supported proposals to reduce night time fire cover in Falmouth and Camborne,

Julia Goldsworthy MP said:

"I am pleased the Scrutiny Committee has made the right decision in asking the Council's executive to reconsider the proposals to reduce night time cover in Falmouth and Camborne.

"The fire at the United Downs Industrial Estate on Wednesday evening demonstrates how important night time cover is and underlines the potential risk that the community could be exposed to if such services were cut-back.

"Ultimately it is years of Government underfunding that have created many of the budgetary difficulties now faced by the County Council. I am sure that the Executive will now face some very tough decisions and that is why our campaign for fair funding for Cornwall remains so important."

Ms Goldsworthy, with her colleague Andrew George MP, recently met with representatives of the local Fire Brigade Union to discuss their concerns.
